White LEDs poised for takeoff
Sharp acceleration in market growth from 2009
White LED takeoff — The market for white LEDs has started to grow in earnest.
Circulation is poised to expand in mainstream markets from 2009 H2,
accelerating growth. We forecast annual average demand growth of 14% over
the next 10 years, with demand for notebook PC and LCD TV backlight
applications driven by Taiwan and Korea.
Slimmer and lighter goes farther for longer — White LEDs make the production
of lighter and leaner electronic equipment possible, and we think future
technologies should allow them to be used to illuminate larger surface areas for
longer periods. They have many other merits, including low power
consumption, long lifespans, and low environmental impact.
Market forecast update — We increase our market size forecast for 2015 to
$4bn, from $3.3bn as of FY3/08, as we now expect the adoption of white LEDs
for notebook PC and LCD TV backlight applications to advance at a faster clip.
Demand for lighting applications is also expanding steadily. Products with
luminance efficiency approaching 100lm/W have appeared on the market. |
