We are initiating coverage of the Global Alternative Energy sector, which we believe has considerable
growth potential. In this report, we consider the world’s energy choices and the place of alternative
energy within this. This should be read alongside our report entitled Power for a New Generation, also
published today, which is our first detailed report on the Wind sector and includes the initiation of
coverage of six global wind turbine equipment manufacturers. Throughout 2007, we plan to publish
further sectoral reviews and stock initiations on other sub-sectors such as clean fuels, biofuels and solar.
Panglossian optimism or the real deal?
Alternative energy sources have been around for many years, although in the past the abundance of cheap
fossil fuels and the relatively high cost of producing energy from alternative or ‘non-conventional’
sources meant that there has been limited commercial or government motivation to research or invest in
alternative sources of energy.
